The mission of the Sacramento Capitals Wheelchair Tennis Association is to promote independence, physical fitness, self-esteem, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging for persons with disabilities. SCWTA organizes and sponsors a wheelchair tennis tournament held annually in June. The competition fostered by the SCWTA tournament improves sports skills and allows disabled individuals to experience the excitement of competition with the thrill of victory as well as the agony of defeat. These experiences help individuals to face the adversity of a disability and to focus on possibilities rather than limitations.
SCWTA is a grass roots organization formed in 2002 by a group of recreational and elite wheelchair tennis players in the Sacramento area. The first SCWTA tournament was held September 27-28, 2003. Since it’s inception the annual tournament has grown to become a Future Series tournament sanctioned by both the International Tennis Federation (ITF) as part of the NEC tourn and United States Tennis Association tournment. As a result, the tournament has attracted increasing numbers of youth and adult competitors.
