It's Another Ace! SCWTA Tournament 2011
Thirty-four wheelchair athletes competed at the 9th Annual Sacramento Capitals Wheelchair Tennis Tournament June 24, 25, and 26, 2011 at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville, CA.
Following a courtside lunch, play got underway with 18 matches scheduled on Friday afternoon. With high temps expected in the low 90's players were pleasantly surprised by the relative cool of the Sacramento sizzle. After some great singles matches, players whet their appetites at a courtside pizza party. While some enjoyed an early evening dip in the Johnson Ranch swimming pool, most players were ready call it an early night in anticipation of a full day of tennis on Saturday.
Shuttle service between the tournament hotel and the tennis courts began bright and early at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday morning and matches were in full swing by 8:00 a.m. Sunny skies and pleasant temps helped to insure a fun and competitive day for everyone. Courtside lunch was provided again with players selecting their favorite deli sandwiches accompanied by fruit, cookies and chips. As always, our helpful volunteers worked tirelessly all day keeping water on the courts, restocking and refilling our supplies, and even handing out Band-Aids and ice packs as needed. As an added bonus this year, complimentary chair massage was provided by Danielle from Kneading To Relax. The hum of activity also included the sound of wheelchair tires inflating at the repair station provided by Home Again Medical, Inc. Play continued into the early evening. However, our banquet's plentiful supply of pork spare ribs, BBQ chicken, potato salad, baked beans and green salad guaranteed that no one, not even the latecomers, went hungry on Saturday night.
The final day of play commenced at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Continental breakfast was available and soon the whoosh of tennis balls filled the air. After two days of competition, players now vied for championship status in their respective divisions. The international rivalry was compelling as the Canadians took on the Americans in the Men's Open Doubles Final. Ultimately the Canadian team prevailed as the tournament matches were completed. After another delicious meal featuring southwest style steak or chicken burritos, players packed up their tennis bags and chairs while volunteers cleaned up tennis courts and packed away tournament supplies.
Game, set, match, SCWTA Tournament 2011 came to a successful close.
