SCWTA Tournament 2010
Friday Warm, Saturday Hot, and Sunday Hotter
Forty-one wheelchair athletes competed at the Sacramento Capitals Wheelchair Tennis Association (SCWTA) 8th Annual Tournament June 25 – 27, 2010 at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville, CA. The thrill and excitement of wheelchair tennis competition combined with top notch facilities and exceptionally hard working volunteers lured seven additional players over our 2009 event. SCWTA is extremely pleased and proud to have attracted both new and returning competitors.
After check in and a light lunch, play began on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Twenty-three matches were scheduled. Fortunately, Friday's high temperature was a balmy 88º allowing play to be followed by a courtside pizza fest. Players returned to the tournament hotel, Orchid Suites, to rest and relax before play resumed on Saturday morning.
Twenty matches were scheduled for Saturday. In hopes of “beating the heat” play started at 8:00 a.m. for many players. Breakfast and lunch were served courtside with ice cold beverages available throughout the very warm day; Saturday’s high temperature was 96º. When play concluded for the day, the SCWTA rental van shuttled players back to the hotel to cool down, rest, and clean up in preparation for the Saturday evening banquet.
The banquet buffet catered by Romano's Macaroni Grill included ensalada bleu, bread, honey balsamic chicken, sundried tomato capellini, broccoli, mushroom ravioli, and fettucini alfredo was set up and served at the hotel. Safe to say that the players enjoyed the meal as there were very few leftovers to be had! A delicious chocolate cake topped off the evening meal.
Twenty-one matches were scheduled for Sunday. Once again, breakfast, lunch, and cold beverages were available throughout the day. Unfortunately, the heat wave not only continued but got hotter. By late afternoon the temperature was 103º. Fortunately, none of the players or volunteers suffered any lasting ill effects from the extreme temperatures.
The tournament benefited enormously from sixteen incredible volunteers who helped serve and clean up meals, assist players with equipment, maintain courts, and shuttle players between the tournament venue, hotel, and airport. As an added bonus for the 2010 tournament we were fortunate to have the services of two top notch photographers who captured the many great moments that occurred throughout the tournament. The SCWTA has posted tournament photos on a Shutterfly website where players can relive the excitement of the competition as well as order any of their favorite action shots. Feedback from players was overwhelmingly positive and many expressed their desire to join us again at the 9th Annual SCWTA Tournament June 24 - 26, 2011.
